About Compassionate Connecting

"Compassionate Connecting" describes our intention to facilitate communication and contribute to deepening relationships between people, within groups and organizations through the practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) GiraffeSurfer@gmail.com

What is Nonviolent Communication (NVC)?
NVC is a form of language based on work by Marshall Rosenberg that is sometimes called compassionate communication. Its purpose is to strengthen our ability to inspire compassion from others and to respond compassionately to others and to ourselves. NVC guides us to reframe how we express ourselves and hear others by focusing on what we are observing, feeling, needing and requesting.

Surfing Metaphor

I like to use waves as a symbol for needs, and "Compassionate Connecting" is the surfboard. The challenge then becomes how to catch the wave so that we can all surf -- to connect and stay connected to others even as we identify our conflicting strategies. Once we each truly hear each others needs, finding mutually satisfying strategies is much more likely than before.

Green Rolling Hills

Last night, I got together with a few friends, as we often do, with the intention of connecting and building community. My friend Garret brought in some music to help us go deeper, and to be known. He gave us a pens and paper and asked us to express what is coming up for us as the music played. Afterwards, we were to consider sharing whatever came up with the group.

As soon as the music started, I became aware of how it helped me to get in touch with my heart. I felt free and safe enough to go deep. Immediately, I began to see green rolling hills in which we could all play. I drew the image of hills intersecting each other (similar to the picture at left and below), and then the words began to flow. Everyone else finished within 5 minutes of the second song, and yet I had much more to express. So, I shared what I could with the group, and went home that evening for a deep sleep. I woke up this morning excited, as I still had the rest of that heart stuff ready to come out. I made a fresh cup of coffee, and I sat down to write. And five pages later, I came to a place where it felt complete. And I have chosen to share it here in the comment below. I would love hearing if anything in it moves you in any way, as it would meet my needs for support, community, contribution.

ps. I searched the web for pictures that captured what I was seeing, and came up with some photos from Quang-Tuan Luong at http://www.terragalleria.com. He gave me permission to share them with you.

I saw green rolling hills, where I was free
and others were too
It was safe, and I was home
I was accepted as I am
I was known, and not alone
I could sing and my song brought joy to others
my heart was free to be whatever it was
and all was good in the land of green hills

and sometimes tears would flow and they were shared...
always acknowledged, but never scared to be what they were
and sadness was treasured just the same
as needs at times weren't met just yet, yet held close
as they brought life as they arose

they have life within them, as they remind us of where we came
they sing regardless if they are met, a sweet song of joy just all the same
like petals on a flower around my soul as freedom sings to ever glow
another petal I call meaning, to always be it's just singing
another is freedom to create, a simple joy that's never too late

safety's a given in this place, the drive to judge evaporates
respect's another that comes with this land,
to love your needs and mine's the gate
and food's a plenty from the land,
as green and richly in the place were we stand
as warmth and shelter are provided,
the glow from our bodies has not subsided

as you and I, and we are here,
we all get along as we choose to live here
it is a choice that we make how to live with each other,
it's a place where our love is alive like in no other
no longer demands reign over our heads,
the freedom in giving is received in us instead

there's balance and ease in all that we do
as we learn to be here in the "now" that's so true
in knowing what's in you, I am able to see
what need is alive, it's just beauty I see
as I celebrate as well what's alive inside of me,
it's that "plank" I remove that allows me to "be"

with the clarity and foresight - of vision of hearts
it brings us that closer to living our hearts
as the gift they were given to us so that we
could share them with love that's much closer to be -
their original purpose to dance and to sing

as we circle with joy that's inspired to be
what we came to believe we now live within thee

I accept who you are just as you accept me
it's a freedom of love that allows me to sing
and also it gives me the desire to roll
down the hill interlocked, and yet driven to flow

it inspires a smile of this place that I yearn
to experience and live in this hope of His turn
it's this Christ that I speak that lives clearly through me
and through you as we play as children in glee

it's his heart that we share that lives on in us now,
as we live in his song, we bring life to our "now"
the beauty and safety that comes from this song
is to know that there's hope it will never run out

abundance just flows through this land and our beings,
as Christ comes alive and heals all that he's seeing
his presence and space both sides do appear
when we let go of judgment, evaluation and fear

it's this place on the hill of green pastures I see,
where we all can live through our love peacefully

this hill -- it is real
I have been there, you see
it happened last night as we shared joyfully
I've seen it, I felt it, would you trust me, please?
I'd like you to go and to play with me

it's fun, and it's safe as it's guarded by gates
as invisible and loving, they just repel hate

the shepherd, he calls us into his great garden
to play in his care, where no one can harm us
as it happens to be, the way things just work out
that in us he lives, and he gave himself out

a way to this garden he leads through his care
to let go of the sword and live peacefully there
his spirit is ours if we choose to embrace it
our spirit is his if we choose just to face it
within this spirit we are what we own
and rest in this love - all are we - and we are One.

Hi James,
I am checking out your blog, and really enjoyed and resonated with your poem. It reminds me of my own spiritual journey, in which I sense Christ drawing me home to myself, to be my true self in the safety of home in his love….The images in your poem capture this so well. Thank you for sharing from your heart in posting this poem. I was touched by it.
